The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED)

Play a vital role in protecting the environmental health of the Southern North Sea.

The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) is an exceptional place in which to pursue your career goals. Sitting within The Department of Energy Security & Net Zero, OPRED is tasked with developing and enforcing the regulatory requirements of the UK's offshore energy projects. Defining both national and international policies relating to this complex sector, we are pursuing the most ambitious environmental and decommissioning goals, with our responsibilities including offshore oil and gas, offshore gas unloading and storage and offshore carbon dioxide storage. Our Regional Delivery Programmes are central to ensuring organisations are complying within our environmental and decommissioning expectations, and it is here that you could make your mark.

As a member of our forward-thinking Environmental Management Team, you will take the lead in assessing and approving a wide range of proposed offshore energy projects relating to the Southern North Sea region. With the overarching aim of ensuring that these propositions will not have a significantly adverse affect either on nature, or on other users of the sea, you will take on a wide array of challenges that will have a lasting impact on the environment.

Leading a team of Environmental Managers in their activities, you will work with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality environmental regime guidance is being delivered, and that our departmental aims are being achieved. This will include developing and implementing policies and procedures, and providing regulatory and policy advice to other Government departments, public bodies, devolved administrations and industry representatives, so there is plenty of scope to build your professional network in a fast-paced environment. You will also oversee applications for licences, research activities, geological surveys, drilling and well intervention operations, so there will be plenty to get involved in!

To be equal to this fascinating challenge, we will expect you to have an extensive knowledge of offshore oil and gas, with a particular emphasis on gas unloading and storage and carbon capture and storage. This will ideally be underpinned by a significant understanding of the marine environment and the successful management of environmental issues, and you will be well-versed in the relevant impact assessments and legislation. As an inspirational leader with the capacity to get the best out of a team, your knowledge will be cemented by a relevant qualification in a field such as Climate and Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Pollution, Marine Resource Development and Protection, Biology, Bioscience, Marine Biology, Microbiology or Zoology. Above all else, you will be excited about the chance to help us achieve our environmental and decommissioning goals, so this is a great opportunity to make a significant impact on the Southern North Sea, and those who live and work in the region.
